Choosing based on the credit card service provided

22 April 2008

When you choose the kind of credit card service you need, you shouldn't just make assumptions based on what you've been told is best. Not everyone needs the same kinds of credit card service, and depending on your spending and repayment habits you will be better off with different credit cards.

If you frequently spend using your credit card as an extra line of credit and only repay the minimum each month or near the minimum, then you would be best off with the lowest interest rate you can manage. You would probably do well to change your habits as well, and if you do wish to do so, then switching to a credit card offering an interest free balance transfer period could help you to reduce your credit card debt. This is not an optimal level of credit card service, but it could possibly help you stay out of as much debt as you might otherwise accrue.

For those who often spend with their credit card but manage to only spend what they can afford to repay each month, then interest free days on purchases coupled with a rewards program are the right kinds of credit card service. Gaining reward points on regular spending allows your money to go further while keeping you out of debt. Using a credit card in this way, as a rewarding means of payment rather than a line of credit, is the optimal use of a credit card.

If you don't spend using your credit card very often, then you would do well to strike a balance between annual fee and interest free days. As long as you are always repaying your balance within the interest free purchase period, you don't need to worry about how high the interest rate is. This level of credit card service allows for the option of credit purchases at the lowest possible cost as long as you use the card wisely.
